March 06, 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Washington, DC (March 6, 2023)—Jeff Pickering, director of Academic Programs at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), announced today the faculty and course offerings for the Institute’s annual Summer Honors Program, an intensive educational program that brings together leading experts and top undergraduates to study public policy at AEI’s headquarters in Washington, DC. The program includes 16 weeklong seminars led by special guests, AEI scholars, university professors, and civic leaders.
Headlining AEI’s 2023 Summer Honors Program will be U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, who will participate in a constitutional law seminar co-sponsored by the Public Law and Policy Program at the Law School of the University of California at Berkeley with AEI scholar and Berkeley law professor John Yoo. Said Yoo, “I am honored and delighted that Justice Thomas will join us this summer at AEI, and I know that students will all look forward, as I am, to learning from his thoughts and legal wisdom.”
AEI’s Christine Rosen, who is also a columnist for Commentary magazine, and David French, an opinion columnist with the New York Times, will each lead new seminars on technology and pluralism. AEI’s Kori Schake and Zack Cooper, who were instrumental in the creation of the Defense Futures Simulator, will be joined by AEI scholar Michael Rubin and Georgetown University’s Paul Miller in teaching foreign and defense policy seminars. AEI Director of Economic Policy Studies Michael R. Strain, Mary Hirschfeld from the University of Notre Dame, and Stephen Smith from Hope College will lead seminars on domestic and international economic issues. AEI Director of Social, Cultural, and Constitutional Studies Yuval Levin will be joined by Timothy P. Carney, Michael Q. McShane, Brent Orrell, and Angela Rachidi from AEI, as well as Elizabeth Corey and David Corey from Baylor University, in teaching seminars on social, cultural, and domestic policy topics.
“We are grateful and thrilled to have so many talented and renowned scholars and national leaders take the time to be part of AEI’s Summer Honors Program,” said Pickering. “It is rewarding to be part of a project where thought leaders guide and teach hundreds of students how to think deeply about the nation and the institutions responsible for American liberty.”
The program brings together students from diverse ideological backgrounds for substantive dialogue and debate. In addition to the seminar courses, students participate in briefings with distinguished guests, have the opportunity to network with young professionals, and visit historical and special sites around Washington.
