Paul Lettow, Former National Security Council Member Known for His Work on US Foreign Policy, Joins AEI as a Senior Fellow

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Washington, DC (February 28, 2023) — American Enterprise Institute (AEI) Director of Foreign and Defense Policy Studies Kori Schake announced today that Paul Lettow has joined AEI as a senior fellow. His work will focus on strategic competition with China and Russia and the political influences on US national security strategies.
Dr. Lettow previously served as the senior director for strategic planning on the National Security Council (NSC), where he led long-range strategic planning, coordinated the interagency National Security Policy Planning Committee, and prepared presidential national security policy directives. Previously, he worked at the State Department as senior adviser to the under secretary of state for democracy and global affairs.
Said Dr. Schake, “We’re elated to have Paul Lettow joining AEI’s Foreign and Defense Policy team. He’ll further strengthen our expertise on national security strategy with a firm grounding in history. We want AEI to be the place where serious conservative thinkers gather and debate ideas.”

Dr. Lettow joins an AEI Foreign and Defense Policy team that has added 12 other important scholars to its ranks in the past three years and drives policy debates on China and defense strategy and resourcing.
In addition to his work on US foreign policy, Dr. Lettow is writing a book on the history of US national security strategy since the Truman administration based on primary research and interviews. He is the author of Ronald Reagan and His Quest to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (Random House, 2006), a landmark history of Ronald Reagan and his role in ending the Cold War. He is also the author or coauthor of numerous articles, reports, and book chapters, including “U.S. National Security Strategy: Lessons Learned” in Texas National Security Review, “Have We Hit Peak America? The Sources of U.S. Power and the Path to National Renaissance” in Foreign Policy, and Strengthening the Nuclear Nonproliferation Regime (Council on Foreign Relations, 2010).
