FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Washington, DC (February 13, 2023)—American Enterprise Institute (AEI) President Robert Doar announced today that Sen. Rob Portman, whose career in public service spans three decades and includes serving in three presidential administrations, two terms in the United States Senate, and six terms in the United States House of Representatives, has joined AEI as a distinguished visiting fellow in the practice of public policy. He will focus on free trade expansion, US-China relations, US-Russia relations, the conflict in Europe, US budget and entitlement reform, worker training, retirement security, and other issues.
Sen. Portman will also join AEI’s American Dream Initiative, where his experience in developing public policy to enhance economic opportunity will be invaluable in the formulation of actionable, data-driven ideas to increase opportunity and upward mobility for all Americans. The American Dream Initiative includes the Center on Opportunity and Social Mobility, which is dedicated to the study of how to expand pathways to intergenerational mobility, equip low-income Americans with the tools to thrive in a changing labor market, and ensure that the American dream of working hard and advancing economically is available to all Americans.
Said Doar, “All of us at AEI are honored that Sen. Rob Portman has joined the community of AEI scholars. His legislative accomplishments are many, and his breadth of experience remarkable. We all look forward to working with him to develop and promote research and ideas to ensure that all Americans have the opportunities they need to lead flourishing lives.”
Sen. Portman served in two cabinet-level posts, Director of the Office of Management and Budget and US Trade Representative, under President George W. Bush. He also served as Associate Counsel to the President and Director, White House Office of Legislative Affairs, under President George H. W. Bush.
During Sen. Portman’s tenure in the Senate, more than 220 of his bills were signed into law by Presidents Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and Barack Obama. His long list of accomplishments includes enacting the bipartisan legislation to improve the nation’s infrastructure, playing a key role in US foreign policy as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and co-chair and founder of the Senate Ukraine Caucus, and authoring crucial legislation to strengthen American efforts against the opioid epidemic and legislation to align America’s education system with the needs of the 21st-century workforce. Sen. Portman also authored legislation to crack down on unfair trade and level the playing field for American workers.
“I am delighted to join the American Enterprise Institute, which has long led efforts to expand freedom, opportunity, and individual liberty,” said Sen. Portman. “I particularly look forward to working with AEI scholars and staff to protect and better the lives of all Americans.”
