FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: (May 24, 2021) — Michael R. Strain, the director of Economic Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI), announced today that Timothy J. Muris, a former chairman of the Federal Trade Commission, is joining AEI as a visiting scholar. At AEI, Mr. Muris will be working on market competition policy, antitrust, and consumer protection issues. He is concurrently foundation professor at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University and senior counsel at Sidley Austin LLP.

“The foundations of US antitrust policy are being questioned and debated with an intensity not seen in decades. The consumer welfare standard for assessing market competition is under threat from both the political right and left. I am thrilled to have a scholar and former policymaker of Tim’s stature joining AEI to work on these critical issues,” said Dr. Strain.

Mr. Muris has had a distinguished career in government service and has held senior positions at the Office of Management and Budget, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Office of the Vice President of the United States. In addition, he has taught at the University of Miami School of Law and served as a law and economics fellow at the University of Chicago Law School. He has also been associated with several well-known law firms.

Added Mr. Muris, “I am delighted to join AEI, an institution that I have long admired. AEI’s scholars are world-class, and I’m happy to be counted among them. Antitrust and consumer protection issues have never been more important, and I look forward to working with my new colleagues at AEI to better understand current challenges and advance the right policy solutions.”
